newnigma2 software update

    • newnigma2 software update

      Hi

I can see there is a software update possibility in newnigma2. I have seen this in a few images I have tried. The OoZoon image simply updated the whole image to an experimental version that didn't work. Therefor I am afraid of just click on software update in newnigma2.

As I simply think the Newnigma image is the best I have tried I will stay on it... However... What happens if I choose "software update"? Will I see a question and choose what to upgrade? Or will it update my 2.8.2 to an experimental version without informing me?

      Thanks

Update process will download available (stable) packages, compares with the installed ones and updates packages that are newer than the installed ones on the box. So no choose what to update or not. And: 2.8.2. is the actual stable version and is called experimental ...

EDIT: Link to unstable feed/packages: feed.newnigma2.to/unstable/. BUT: there is no support for unstable feed/packages ...

      Ok thanks

IF there are stable versions at all (I don't know) it would maybe be a good feature request to have the option to just update between stable released. With a checkbox somewhere maybe...

But I would have expected as a minimum to have an option to see what will be upgraded and then be able to choose accept or decline...

      Thanks for the answer

First, your current stable Newnigma2 will only be updated to an other stable version of Newnigma2, if there is a newer version available. The current version is 2.8.2 and ther isn't any update planned yet, so no problem at all.
Second your are able to update your installed plug-ins. Again, only if there is an update available from our stable feed.

One remark: The stable feed is called stable feed, because all used packages used there are tested and guess... stable. So it is safe to use it and it is not necessary to bother users with any further questions regarding the update.

Feel free to have yourself a look at our stable and unstable feed:

      unstable Feed

      stable Feed

Another remark: It's not possible to switch the feeds between stable or unstable, without manually editing files in the Newnigma2 Image. So it is not possible to overwrite your stable image by fault with an unstable one. :)

      cheers mate

Thank you very much for that answer

Maybe it's possible to get that info somewhere if you are fluent in German...

      Anyway, many thanks

The info you just told me of course.... I.e how the update process works. For example that a stable (well considered stable...) image would never by default be overwritten by an experimental snapshot updates. I did not even knew the links (stable and unstable tree links) you sent me... Why? Well because this forum is mainly in german which I only understand fragments of. You told me:
"So it is safe to use it and it is not necessary to bother users with any further questions regarding the update"

"Bother other users"... Well you could see it this way. At least if you want only Germans to use Newnigma2 images. Don't you think I have tried to find the info in english before posting here? I can for sure say that I should have chosen another image than newnigma2 if another image for DM8000 would be equal in quality AND have had an english forum or at least the main info in english. No offense here... It is a little bit frustrating to be forced use bablefish big laugh to undertand the threads here.

    • Ahh,

      now i understand. :)

I'm sorry, but you can be sure, we would like to do more description and documentation in English for sure. We are only a small team with only a few members and it is difficult to keep both, German and English updated and on the same source. So because the members are mainly German native speakers, German is of course first choice here. :)

But you are of course welcome here in our Newnigma2-Forum and can freely ask any question regarding Dreambox or Newnigma2! Of course in English or in German, your choice. *g* I think if someone knows a solution to help out, you'll get an answer for sure. ;)

"So it is safe to use it and it is not necessary to bother users with any further questions regarding the update"

This was only meant, that the mechanism of updating does not ask any further questions, or give any further infos about what is updated. Mainly to not bother the user (regardless if German or English speaking) with needless information. Thats the intention. Of course there can be other opinions about this, but this is how we decided to handle it. ;)

    • Maybe I can help with some english docs or howtos in the near future. Or maybe some coding as I am a unix guy since -91.

But first I think I must own the DM8000 for a month or so to learn it better. right now I going through the kernel modules, versions etc to see what is building this embedded linux. Maybe it's possible to create an english wiki for newenigma2??????

B t w... how do I report bugs when I cannot understand where to do it? Asking as I have found one... Not serious, but annoying...

Tnx for you answers so far.

      Regards
      /Per-Olov

You're welcome, if you can spend a whole bunch of your free time in the project. ;)

Feel free to just report it here in the forum, just plain in English, the devs will know what it is all about. :) Even if more info is needed to reproduce the bug, they will tell you what they need, or to do to get the needed info. :)

    • hey,
